December Book Reports

I have had students and parents asking me about the books that their child is supposed to read for December. We purposefully did the November book report before Thanksgiving Break to give you a little extra time to read the book. This month your child is supposed to read a Great Illustrated Classic. If you haven't heard of these before, you can go to:
greatillustratedclassics.com. On the right hand side it will say: Great Illustrated Classics. Click on it to see examples of these books. PLEASE GO TO THE LEHI LIBRARY AND BORROW THEM THERE!! There is no need to actually purchase the book!

The book report is a Pop-Up Book. The front cover needs to be a scene from the story, just like a book cover would be. On the inside there needs to be 1-3 pop up tabs. On the back cover, the information needs to be filed out. Follow the following directions:

Steps to follow:
1. Fold the blank cardstock paper in half. Make the ground elements below the fold line and the upright elements above the fold line.

2. Decide how many items you want to pop up (Make one to three tabs). Long tabs will make items pop out farther than short tabs.
Cut tabs
Fold tabs down
Unfold tabs and push forward

3. Make a colored picture for each of your tabs. You mightmake people, ships, animals, houses, trees, etc. Cut the pictures out. Glue one to each tab. Put the glue on the tab, NOT on the picture.

4. Fold the cardstock paper with book information on it in half. Glue the pop-up form inside the folder.

The front cover needs to have the title of the book you read, the author of the book, and your name. It also needs to have a colored illustration of a scene from the book on it.
The inside will be a 3d, colored illustration and should be a different scene from the book you read.
The back cover has information about your book. The summary and critic’s corner need to be completed in complete sentences. The critic’s corner is your opinion of the book (was it a bad/good/excellent book? Why?).

Pilgram's Thanksgiving

Another exciting thing that we did: we experienced what a real Pilgram's Thanksgiving was like, and we also got to play some real Pilgram games! Thank you again, to all the families who were able to help make this day so wonderful! It turned out amazing! Especially to our Room Mom and Assistant Room mom who organized all the help and food: Shelli Winward and Kiersten Beauchene!!

November Book Reports

These past few school days have been great! On Friday, November 19 and Monday, November 22 we got to see a lot of really cool book reports and learn about a lot of people!! Way to go class!

Our First Day of November!

No math homework tonight because with our Minimal Monday, we simply didn't have time to get to it! We did many other things today such as a reader's theater about Christopher Columbus (who we learned did NOT sail on the Mayflower, he sailed on the Santa Maria!), talked about persuasion (so we can learn how to write persuasive essays), and of course, literacy. We started working on a couple of songs for Hope of America as well (notes about that will be coming home soon).

Practicing Spelling

Hi Parents and Students!
I want to tell you about some ways to practice spelling words at home. The first one is new to me also, but I just learned about a website called spellingcity.com. It's really cool, you should take a look at it! It has many spelling games on it!

When you go to this website, click on the red and yellow 'STUDENTS' tab in the top right corner of the page. Next scroll down all the way to the bottom. On about the middle of the page will be the blue underlined words 'FIND A LIST'. After clicking on it, search by teacher by simply typing 'Dietz' and clicking search. I should be the top name that appears (Allison Dietz). Click on my name. Now you will have the option of 'Teach', 'Test' or 'Games'. You can use these three options to help you study spelling at home. There are tons of games, I hope you find them fun!

Here are some other ideas of how to study spelling words at home:
Write the words in alphabetical order
Write each word in a sentence
Write a story using all of the spelling words
Type the words on the computer (do NOT use copy and paste!!!)
Have a parent give you a home quiz on each word
Write each word 5 times

Don't forget that one of the most important things is to SPELL THE WORD CORRECTLY WHEN YOU ARE PRACTICING!!! Don't practice spelling the words incorrectly!
